LifeScan, Inc. is a diagnostic systems manufacturer with products focusing on the diabetes market, specifically blood glucose monitoring systems.

An anonymous former LifeScan employee writes about the downsides of working for the company on the "Glassdoor" website on April 12, 2013:

"Culture on the marketing team is deplorable. The culture on the commercial side has become increasingly cut-throat and political as a result of the successive years of layoffs. The squeaky wheel gets the attention, not necessarily the most competent or diligent person. Only a true political animal can survive in this culture."

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee says

"Bad management and absolutely no innovation. That was it's downfall. Barely any company left ."

Former Employee - Senior Product Director says

"Micromanaging upper management, weak pipeline, slow processes, shrinking budgets, issues with Medicare reimbursement caused major cost cutting."

Associate Marketing Manager says

"1. First time managers who do not know how to coach and mentor a team are horrible to work for. 2. Executives don't seem to be able to stick to their so called long term strategy and keep making changes, making it very difficult to stick to goals/forecasts. 3. No respect for work/life balance - they often say 'go home' and heap a pile of work on you and say we need this asap...but go home. How do you do that? And if you work a 70 hour week they call it a 'strong work ethic'. 4. Management has no idea how to handle a company I think..they hired a whole bunch of associate marketing managers and then few months later threw us out of marketing and into sales and then tried to give us our jobs back when they found out we may take legal action..by then half of us were so furious (as some of us had moved across the coast to take up a marketing job specifically post MBA) we had found other jobs - is that how they value their employees? 5. When you tell them you are stressed and having a breakdown and ask for a rotation you are denied and given the ugly treatment thereafter."

Former Employee - Staff Scientist says

"Middle and Senior Management are inexperienced, unqualified and create a clique environment actively enforcing a culture of favoritism. This was especially true of the engineering functions which are currently headed by former members of R&D who were unable to progress in that area (likely due to incompetence)."

Current Employee - Manager says

"The most boring job I ever had. Zero innovation and most likely no future. Unless somebody buys them and starts investing. Pay is very average. The competition is much more advanced. In terms of culture it is like back in the 90ies. No real leadership, the managers don’t take any decisions or use their brain, they just communicate decisions from the top or other departments. People are not empowered. Also, the communication is very poor and not transparent. One can learn more news in the coffee corner than from the management or official communication channels. The Zug office is shrinking. Every other week somebody is leaving. People are highly not motivated. I’ve not seen any inspiring leader here so far."

Current Employee - Validation Engineer says

"Johnson and Johnson trying to sell business due to shrinking market for product, going through redundancies throughout this year, production being outsourced, so closure imminent"

"At least in my case, they didn’t honor their promise to convert me from contractor status to permanent employee. That was on top of being stuck on graveyard shift for four years. One more thing—the manager I had there was worse than useless."

Production Operative (Current Employee) says

"Terrible place to work if you are a production operator, treated badly underpaid and understaffed. The shifts are long and repetitive. Manager favourites get better pay rises than others, pay inequality is rife. Hundreds of office staff well paid doing nothing productive. Avoid this place like the plague."

QA Manager (Former Employee) says

"Used to be a great place to work. However, over the last 5 years management has apparently abandoned the JNJ Credo as the work environment has deteriorated greatly. It appears Management is in the process of closing the WW Headquarters in Milpitas as they are currently transferring many positions overseas and/or to the East Coast and massively laying off people locally. However, when asked about this, Management continues to deny this. Their actions speak louder than their words."

Shift Maintenance engineer (Former Employee) says

"Commence work at 7:00 (PM or AM) for 12 hours. No difference in workload whether day or night. Receive shift hand-over to ascertain current faults and future scheduled maintenance tasks. Make sure appropriate phone has been handed over for shop floor comms. Learning was a continuous process with courses run according to maintenance needs (e,g, pneumatics). Mediocre/untrustworthy management unfortunately targeting 5 individuals for severance despite 12 unsuccessful voluntary applications. Co-workers younger than myself so other than the job, very little in common. Hardest part of the job was day-time sleeping hence problems dealing with night shifts. The most enjoyable part of my original job was starting up the company from 1997 to 1998 and working in the development team up to 2003. It was like a paid hobby designing test equipment. Would you believe we even worked holidays if the need arose! Happy days!Subsidised lunch. Good pension scheme. Cut price company shop.Night shifts. Patronising bonus scheme. Dodgy management."
